Talent Academy Finale 2025: Young Scientists Explore Laser Innovation

Twelve young talents from Czechia and Slovakia gathered at the HiLASE Centre and ELI Beamlines for the finale of Talent Academy 2025. Over three intensive days, they turned a bold idea into reality using laser light and biodegradable materials to create functional prototypes of laser printers.

From Concept to Working Prototype
This year’s challenge focused on sustainable innovation. Students designed devices capable of printing QR codes and images using a photosensitive gel made from vitamins C and B2. Working in small teams, they combined chemistry, physics, programming, and engineering, supported by mentors from both laser centres. The focus was not only on technology, but also on teamwork, experimentation, and rapid problem-solving core skills in modern research and innovation.

“It was fascinating to see how quickly the students picked up coding, learned to work with optical fiber, and started solving challenges that real research teams face every day,”  says Šimon Šatra, laser workshop instructor from HiLASE Centre.

Hands-On Science Meets Real Research

Talent Academy is designed as a practical introduction to cutting-edge science. Finalists experienced the full innovation process: testing materials, optimizing laser exposure, building mechanical components, and presenting their results to experts.

Four students were selected for research internships at HiLASE and ELI Beamlines, where they will contribute to ongoing projects in laser science and technology.

Empowering the Next Generation

The finals concluded with a student conference, where participants presented their results to researchers from HiLASE and ELI Beamlines. In his closing remarks, Daniele Margarone, Director for Research and Operations at ELI Beamlines, praised the students for their creativity, perseverance and teamwork.

“This year, the students once again pushed the boundaries of what is possible, not only technologically but also as a team. They demonstrated exceptional commitment, passion, and true team spirit. And that is exactly what science today needs.”

Talent Academy is part of LASER-PRO, a Horizon Europe project focused on advancing European innovation through laser technologies. By connecting young people with top research infrastructure and experienced mentors, the initiative inspires the next generation of scientists and innovators who will shape the future of European photonics.
